Your Gift Making a Difference

“When my husband was diagnosed with cancer, I was devastated, I was lost. He seemed to be so brave, yet I knew he was just as scared as I was”

From the diagnosis of a life-threatening illness’ through the bereavement journey, Hospice volunteers are ready to help individuals and the families and friends that support them. Wherever they reside, Hospice volunteers offer companionship and help with practical needs.

“I am so appreciative of my Hospice volunteers. I know I am a strain on my family and having some help around the house lets me stay at home where I have lived all my life. Being close to my family is so important.”

I am so often thanked for my contributions as a Hospice volunteer, but it is I who am so grateful for the rewards I receive in sharing special moments with my clients, my friends. I have learned so much from each and every client I have known.”

“When my husband died, I didn’t know what to do with all of my thoughts and feelings. Having someone to confide in, to share with, was so helpful.”

Hospice volunteers continue to offer help to families and friends, including children and young people. In a variety of ways, Hospice can help individuals with the roller coaster of emotions that follow the death of a loved one.

Trained volunteers are the cornerstone of the compassionate care provided by Hospice. In whatever role, from client-service to Board involvement, it is the volunteer who makes all the difference in the ability of Hospice to deliver quality programs and services.

It is estimated that 160,000 people die each year in Ontario needing hospice palliative care services and only 5 to 15 percent of Ontarians have access to hospice palliative services. A recent poll indicated that 90% of Canadians wish to remain in their homes during the final stages of life, yet 75% of deaths still take place in hospitals and long-term care homes. 94% of Canadians feel that they could not adequately care for a dying loved one without outside support. Hospice palliative care provides that support.

“The passion and power of our volunteers is unleashed by the strength of our donors – everyone can play a role in being there for an individual, their family and friends, when lives are turned upside down.”
